Help with all aspects
We can help with planning, pre and post natal care, delivery, and stud dog management.
Noahs Crossing Veterinary Clinic prides itself on the consistent results achieved through its reproductive programs. When looking to breed your bitch, results matter! With over 15 years experience we can guide you on the various aspects of breeding; from planning the timing of mating with progesterone testing, pregnancy diagnosis using ultrasound, bitch care during pregnancy, whelping or caesarean delivery, care of newborn puppies and stud dog management. We can help you get the best results whether you are looking at natural matings, vaginal inseminations or artificial insemination using chilled or frozen semen.
Dr Chris Girling has been trained in the USA by two companies in the collection, storage and use of frozen semen. Dr George Govette at Clone INC and Professor Carrol Platz Jr at the International Canine Semen Bank (ICSB) in Oregon are considered pioneers in the industry. They have continued to develop and improve their systems, with litters still being produced from semen they froze in the 70’s and 80’s.
Frozen semen inseminations at Noahs Crossing are done by the surgical method under general anaesthetic. This is considered the gold standard for artificial insemination (AI) as it is the only method that allows direct examination of the reproductive tract. The procedure takes about 10-15 minutes to perform. The surgical method allows us to use reduced semen numbers when compared to transcervical (TCI) methods, which is particularly important when using imported semen, or when a service fee is being paid for each breeding unit.
Dr Girling has performed transcervical AI’s for over 10 years and good results can be achieved, however increased semen numbers and multiple inseminations are usually required. Owners need to be aware that bitches that have unhealthy reproductive tracts cannot be diagnosed with transcervical methods, and as such similar success rates to surgical AI’s can never be achieved. This can add to cost, time, travel and loss of semen for the client so it is best to discuss with our vets about your individual bitch selection, and the best course of action for her.
Noahs Crossing is able to use proprietary medias from ICSB to dramatically improve the quality of frozen semen post thaw, including semen which has been frozen by other methods. This has enabled us to consistently produce litters from semen of lesser quality.
Are you looking to have your stud dog’s semen checked, or frozen for export or future use? The majority of all semen processing (collection, freezing/thawing) is performed by Dr Chris Girling. In the event that there are issues with sperm quality identified, we have a dietary supplement from ICSB that has been used with success to improve semen quality.
If you’re looking to import frozen semen please contact us for advice on where to have the stud dog collected and frozen, and the requirements to meet Australia’s strict quarantine laws. With over 15 years of experience we can help save you the heartache of importing poor quality semen!
