Prehabilitation

Prehabilitation: Preparing Your Pet for Orthopaedic Surgery

Proper preparation before surgery can improve recovery and reduce stress. Follow these steps to help your pet:

1. Adjust to a New Routine

  • Gradually reduce high-impact activities.
  • Introduce crate rest with positive reinforcement.
  • Supervise play to prevent further injury.

2. Prepare the Home

  • Use non-slip surfaces like rugs or mats.
  • Block off stairs and areas with slippery floors.
  • Create a quiet, comfortable rest zone.

3. Pre-Surgery Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy sessions can help your pet:

  • Reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Maintain muscle tone and joint mobility.
  • Get familiar with the process and therapist, easing post-surgery transitions.

4. Physical Preparation
Speak with Noah’s Crossing Rehab Team about exercises to improve stability and core strength. Many of these can be incorporated during feeding times for added convenience.

5. Mental Stimulation During Rest
Provide enrichment activities to reduce boredom and anxiety:

  • Use slow feeders, LickiMats, and KONGs for mealtime engagement.
  • Introduce puzzle toys and brain games for low-movement mental stimulation.
